At Home with Jo and Theo // A Family Session In Loughborough

Family photography at home

At home family photography sessions, I call them Our Family Story sessions, are probably one of my most favourite ways to spend a day. Getting to know you and your family, being welcomed into your home, spending the afternoon hanging out, playing, chatting, and capturing wonderfully emotive natural photographs that will mean so much and last many lifetimes.

Back in April Jo asked me to come and create some photographs of her and her beautiful little boy Theo, as they celebrated both his first birthday and their first few months as a new family together! I was delighted to travel to their gorgeous home in Loughborough and meet them both and capture their amazing bond and incredible personalities! I left feeling so honoured to meet them both and to learn about their story to date. Adoption is such a precious precious gift.

I’ll let Jo explain a bit more about her emotional story and why she chose to book this session with Indigo and Violet, and also how she found the whole experience.

AN OUR FAMILY STORY INTERVIEW WITH JO

What made you choose to book an at home Our Family Story session with Indigo and Violet Photography?
I chose you as really liked the more relaxed style of photography from researching online and on social media. From the first enquiry email I felt at ease as you were so warm and friendly.

Did you have a particular reason for choosing to have your session now?
It was Theo’s first birthday and a chance to capture him at this special milestone. As Theo is adopted it was also a chance to capture some special photos for family and friends of our little family unit as we don’t have any of him from birth.

What made you choose to have an at home Our Family Story documentary style session, over say a studio photoshoot?
I loved the idea of having a shoot at home in our own environment so the photos would be informal and fun. I knew it would capture Theo at his best just playing and laughing at home.

The photos were extra special for us as like many others, we’ve not had a straight forward journey to become a family.  I sadly lost my husband 3 years ago after a brave battle with Lymphoma, he was just 35 years old when he passed away. My heart was very broken and it’s been a difficult few years trying to come to terms with the loss and build a new life.

I wanted to become a mother and felt like I have a lot of love to give. So I applied to adopt just over a year ago. It’s an intense process but has been well worth it. My amazing little boy was placed with me just before Christmas aged 7 months. He has brought so much joy and happiness to me and my family and we are very lucky to have him in our lives.

How did it feel to have a photography session like that in your own home?
Jenny put me at ease straight away, she was so relaxed and easy company. She engaged with Theo straight away and so he was very comfortable and wanted to play as she snapped away. It was easy to forget that there was a camera as it wasn’t posed, so we just played naturally as we normally would.

Were you worried about anything, either before booking or in the lead up to your session?
I was a little worried about how tidy the house should be, what should we be wearing etc.. but I think it’s best to just be as you normally are, the beauty of the photos is to capture normal every day life.

What would you say to other families potentially considering an Our Family Story session?
I would highly recommend as it’s so special to capture some normal every day family moments, these little things are really actually the important things that matter in life.

What did you think about your photograph collection that you received? Were they what you expected?
I was so pleased with them! They exceeded my expectations! It’s difficult to choose any favourites as there are so many lovely ones.
They capture so perfectly the bond between us, which is so special.
