On Wednesday the 30th May, childhood sweethearts Nicol and Josh married at The West Mill in Derby surrounded my their friends and family. This is their wedding preview!
The West Mill can be found tucked away in Darley Abbey, Derby, and is a beautiful exclusive-use venue split over four floors. It boasts exposed brick walls and copper touches, and lots of nods to it’s cotton mill past. I have photographed many weddings now at the West Mill, and it is always a favourite of mine. Of course that’s because it is beautiful top to toe, but also because the staff there are so fantastic, and the space just lends itself perfectly to a well planned out and relaxed wedding day.
Nicol and Joshua’s Wedding Day
Nicol and Josh were childhood sweethearts who met when they were just 14 years old. 10 years later it was wonderful to get to share in their wedding celebrations.
Nicol and her bridesmaids Kat, Hema, and Rosie, hung out together in the West Mill’s dressing room and helped Nicol get ready for her ceremony. It was so fun when they decided to do a unpromptu practice of walking down the aisle, in their dressing gowns and high heels!
Joshua and his two best men; his brothers Dominic and Henry, were busy welcoming their guests downstairs. It was then lovely to take some photographs of the three of them together, as well as with their mum and dad Deborah and Steven. (As a mum of two boys myself, I like to make sure I get some lovely photos of the Groom with his mum and dad too!)
Their ceremony was a beautiful affair with readings from both of their mums and their niece. Nicol and Josh wrote and read their own wedding vows too, which included both humorous and emotive promises to each other. They brought a tear to everyones eye!
The rain that was predicted hadn’t appeared, so it was down to the courtyard for a confetti tunnel for the Bride and Groom’ exit! Family group photographs were then captured, and lots of wonderful candids, before it was time to have a little wander with Josh and Nicol for their newlywed photographs. As always this time was very relaxed and lots of fun! The perfect time for a bride and groom to escape the busyness for a moment and spend some time together.
Before long, we were all being called in to be seated for the wedding breakfast. Speeches were given by Nicol’s father Tim, Joshua, and then Josh’s brothers Dominic and Henry. It was Dominic and Henry’s best man speech that really moved me to happy tears, as they spoke glowingly about growing up with Josh as their older brother and Nicol as their ‘surrogate’ sister, and all the things they had enjoyed together as a family. It was truly moving.
After the meal we had some fun with photographing the wedding party back up on the West Mill’s ceremony floor. Using flashes and candles I created some magazine-style portraits of their group, and had lots of fun in the process! (See an example below!)
As the evening drew in, Jake Soloman got the party started with his amazing guitar playing and singing. Nicol and Josh chose a Mumford and Sons song for their first dance, and then they invited their guests to join them on the dance floor and partied the night away!
It was an absolute pleasure to have been asked to be Joshua and Nicol’s wedding photographer at the West Mill. I wish you both all the happiness in the world guys!
