When Serena and David booked with Indigo and Violet to provide their wedding photography at Thornbridge Hall, near Bakewell in Derbyshire, I knew it was going to be a very special wedding! From the second you walk through the garden gate and see that view over northern Derbyshire and then you turn and look at the house, you realise you have just had the biggest smile on your face for the last few minutes!
I first met Serena and David, and David’s 10 year old son Alex, on Thornbridge Hall’s lawn a couple of months before their wedding, and I was blown away by how absolutely lovely they were. We sat with a drink and discussed their plans for their wedding day; how they didn’t want the fuss of any formal group photos and how they were planning speeches on the lawn and so on, and they made it clear that they just wanted to feel relaxed and enjoy a good time with all their friends. And that’s the beauty of being a documentary wedding photographer – my ninja-like skills of being able to blend in to the guests, and just be another friend, means you never feel like your wedding is a photoshoot and I can capture all the natural expressions and moments of fun that a more classic wedding photographer would miss!
When the morning of the 24th July came around the sun was peeking through the clouds and everyone was feeling the excitement of the day, including me! As I walked up the drive I heard Serena banging on the window with curlers in her hair and a great big smile and I couldn’t wait to get started! Hanging out with the bridesmaids and flower girls was just a delight, and Alex and his friend Alex were just the sweetest and I couldn’t have asked for more!
I promised Serena and David no rain, as I knew how much they wanted to be able to spend the day on the lawn enjoying Thornbridge Hall’s unrivalled views, and the weather gods complied.
The day went off without a hitch. From the beautiful bridesmaids gifts, to the beaming smile from David as Serena came down the stairs. From the nervous anticipation of Alex, who was waiting to hand over the wedding rings, to the peels of laughter as rings couldn’t fit on fingers. From champagne and strong red wine, to milk and cookies for the kids. From jukeboxes and polaroid cameras, to impromptu games of football in bare feet. It was just a wonderful wonderful day. You just couldn’t have asked for more out of your wedding day!
Congratulations Serena and David! It was an honour to be your wedding photographer for your beautiful wedding at Thornbridge Hall. I wish you both all the happiness in the world! I hope you enjoy looking through this little preview of photographs, and I can’t wait to get your full gallery to you!
